Archive for February, 2008

Though I spend much of the time longing for a fabulously four-seasoned climate, this past week in Arizona has been beautiful. And though today was full of meetings and stress, Tuesday lent to open windows, a cup of green tea, and (of course) my favorite distraction from homework. Pretty flowers compliments of Trader Joe’s!

joy and peace

The problem with perusing other people’s blogs when I’m bored/taking a break/whatever is that I will inevitably stumble upon a new one and read through it, going into older entries in search of more and more eye candy. This doesn’t sound like a problem? Well, the part that’s the problem is I get to the Christmas entries! I LOVE Christmas. It’s just so pretty and magical and happy. Can I really hold out until December comes around again?

Chocolate Chip Cookies

As far as I have discovered, I have but one weakness as a baker. I can’t make chocolate chip cookies. WTF? I mean, come on! They’re a STAPLE. Maybe it’s some sort of mental block, but I will never understand why my chocolate chip cookies don’t turn out right. In Albuquerque, I blamed this weakness on various circumstances: the altitude, expired baking soda, overmixing, etc. I made these cookies last night (in Tucson), and they’re still hideous! This picture makes them look prettier than they really are. But maybe I’m just a little too critical? After all, they do taste great. If you’re looking for the recipe, it’s here. Maybe yours will be prettier than mine.

Whilst baking and complaining about my deteriorating old hand mixer, Mia went out and got me a new one for my birthday! (Yes, my birthday is in June..it’s a long story.) It was so nice of her. I can’t wait to try it out!

In other news, I GOT MY CROCS TODAY!! They’re bright orange and ridiculously comfortable..if a bit ridiculous in general. I am so excited. My sweetie says you’re not supposed to wear them with socks, but what’s the point of not-sneakers if you can’t show off your handknits?

challah back

CHALLAH! For my first bread ever, I’d say it turned out pretty good, no? In fact, for ANY bread, I’d say it turned out pretty good. It tastes at least as amazing as it looks, which is pretty great if I do say so myself. See what happens when I’m worried about my eggs going bad?

If it looks/tastes this good AFTER baking.. They looked glorious going into the oven.

Oven Shot

They looked glorious coming out of the oven.

And they taste like heaven. I gave one to my friend Katie for her birthday today, and she was amazed. The recipe can be found here, if you’re interested. I won’t say it’s quick (because it’s really not), but it’s pretty easy if you have the time to let it rise and everything.

toe up

toe up

..and I DO mean toe up! I finished this sock yesterday. I probably won’t get the chance to start on the second sock for at least a few days, especially as school is getting particularly busy at the moment. I can’t wait to finish these and get a chance to wear them, though! They’re made out of 100% cotton and SO soft. Mmm.

I’m also currently working on a really pretty scarf (for MYSELF, gasp)! But sadly, the pictures I took of it, well..suck. Hopefully I’ll get some better ones soon. It’s a lacy/leafy pattern, and I’m making it out of Malabrigo worsted (I had been eyeing this particular yarn for quite a while prior to my purchase last Friday) in the colorway “Curacao.” Apart from being by far the prettiest yarn I’ve ever had, it knits LIKE A DREAM. I’m sure it will feel great around my neck, too! :o)

I will learn how to make my blog look the way I want it to, and I will love it, and it will stay that way. Until then, I will change my theme whenever I feel like I need a change..like today (or yesterday).

be mine?

Happy Valentine’s Day! I found these cute valentines on the purl bee, and I just couldn’t resist making them for all of my friends. Of course, mine aren’t such perfect hearts as the example in the pattern, but they look cute nonetheless.

I also made this really yummy cake for my sweetie! (..and WOW is that an awful picture of it.) I promise, it looks better in real life..and it’s tasty! Yes, those are mini-kisses on top. :o)

My sweetie “gave” me a pair of orange Crocs! (They got held up in the mail, and I am so excited for them to arrive!) Now I’ll be able to show off my socks in style.

I finally got a chance to make some red bean buns last night. They’re one of my favorite things to eat, and it only recently occurred to me that a Chinese bakery is not the only place to get them (duh). In any case, they weren’t particularly difficult to make, just a bit time-consuming. The red bean paste and the bun dough are made separately until you put them together pre-steaming. In any case, I am certain this is a recipe I will make again.
Bianca's Scarf!

Last night I also finished Bianca’s scarf! ..and then I gave it to her! The scarf beast is sated. ;o) ..at least for the time being, that is. I can’t wait to see what the scarf looks like with her pink blazer. I used a pattern called “My So-Called Scarf,” and I think the stitches turned out to be really pretty.

it came in the night

It comes in the night..

Sneaky little bastard..
I’m thinking I might make an army of these guys. I adapted the pattern from one I found here. You know, since I DON’T READ JAPANESE. ..but I kind of wish I did. :o)

We went and looked at puppies today! I’m not allowed to have one yet, but there were some real cuties. We got to play with a pair of dachshund puppies, and I wanted so badly to take one of them home. Someday.

So, I finished my first mitten (quite a few days ago, in fact), and I really just don’t like it. Somehow, the pattern didn’t turn out the way I had envisioned it. I haven’t worked on frogging my ugly sweater for quite a while, either. In fact, the only thing I’ve made real progress on is Bianca’s scarf, which is almost finished.

Maybe it’s just school picking up and getting stressful, but I feel like I might be in some kind of knitting funk. Though it seems like there are several things I want to make, I don’t know what I want to make next, and I’m just pretty disappointed about the mittens. However, there are quite a few sock patterns I’ve been interested in, and recently it seems like I get the most satisfaction out of socks, anyhow? We will see..
