new beginnings!

I’m making a vest!! I’ve had the yarn since this summer, and I just finally started on it. I’m really excited. :oD

I just really hope I get the chance to wear it someday. We are having the warmest winter ever, and it sucks.

I’m also making some Noro socks! ..another thing I’ve been waiting to make since this summer.

I wasn’t planning on starting another pair of socks, but..what can I say? It’s like I can’t NOT make socks. Hmm.

I’ve actually heard a lot of really negative things about this yarn.  So far I’m loving the socks, though!  I mean, I can see where people are coming from with the thick/thin/uneven complaints, but it’s not really bothering me.  It adds character, right?  And it’s SO PRETTY.

Enjoy the weekend!

OMG HISTORY

As we’ve all heard, this is a really historic week. What? No, I don’t mean the new president. MY TEAM IS GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!! I am so excited! Go Cards!

As for knitting, sometimes it’s awesome having no ongoing projects. The clean slate makes me feel really creative about what I decide to make next, and maybe I end up with a bunch of nifty smaller projects..like these amigurumi safety cones.

The pattern is so quick, and I just love the adorable result!! Once I started making them, I didn’t really want to stop. I may just make more until I run out of garish orange yarn. :o)

I also finished a hat today! This one’s going to be a birthday gift.

It’s made with short rows, and the construction was really fun! The pattern can be found here. I had almost exactly the perfect amount of yarn in one ball..I think I’ve got a yard or so left. The yarn I used was insane, though!! From the outside, I thought it was going to be all red and brown. That yellow/orange was really a shock. I love the way it turned out! Maybe I’ll make another one for me. :o)

In the midst of all of this joyous crochet/knitterly creation, I had a tragic laundry incident last night where I partially felted my awesome new socks. I could’ve cried. They are still wearable, but significantly tighter and warmer. Maybe it’ll turn out to be a good thing if I need REALLY warm socks. Superwash my ASS!!

feeding friendsies

Last night I had friends over for dinner, giving me the perfect opportunity to try out more lovely kitchen-themed Christmas gifts!  (Seriously, I was spoiled this year..so now I’m going to pay it forward and spoil everyone I know with food.)

After some careful deliberation, I settled upon pesto pasta with chicken.  And I made my own pesto!  It was delicious..and a lot easier than I expected.  You can find the recipe here.  I will definitely be working it into other dishes!

For dessert, I made a gingerbread spice bundt cake.  I’d offer up the recipe, but it was a boxed cake mix from Williams-Sonoma.  It was really good!  (..another really cool gift.  I never would’ve thought to buy cake there, but it was delicious, so maybe I will in the future!)

Something about the shape makes it way better than other kinds of cake!  I foresee many bundts in my future.  :o)

new socks and empty needles

I finished another pair of socks!

These are some test knit socks for my friend Claire, made with yarn from Keegan Lane Yarns.  I really love them!  The lace pattern on the sock was fun to knit, and the yarn is gorgeous, soft, and superwash.  I couldn’t ask for more.  I just feel bad that they took so long to knit!  August 25-January 15.  What can I say?  At the beginning of the semester, I thought I was going to have a really light workload and stress-free fall.  Oh yeah.  And then I adopted Snake.  So much for that.

Of all the socks I’ve made, this is only the third pair I’ve done on US 1s.  I think I’m going to stick with 2s from now on.  The difference seems small when you think about it, but considering how many stitches there are in a pair of socks, it’s significant..and really sort of maddening.

Now that I’ve finished the only two projects I was working on, I’m left with empty needles, a ton of potential projects, and no idea what to start next.  Sometimes it feels like I’m only inspired when I already have a ton of stuff going on and no time to knit anyways.  Maybe that’s the reason why so many people cast on a billion and one projects at a time.  Hmm.  Definitely something to consider.

Anyways..DID I MENTION I GOT A KITCHENAID FOR CHRISTMAS?!  Best.  Gift.  Ever.  (We named it Bruce.)  I got to use it for the first time last night, to make some chocolate chip cookies.  I’ve made them before and stuff, so I didn’t take a picture.  But I DID take a picture of the cookies I made this afternoon..

If they don’t look all that appetizing, that’s because they’re for Snake.  They are really simple to make, just four ingredients, and you can find the recipe here.  They call for regular old people ingredients..I’m not gonna lie, I tried one.  It was gross.  Snake seems to like them a lot, though, so that’s all that matters!  ..especially because (you can’t tell in the picture), the recipe made an epic SHIT TON of cookies.  Seriously, I have half of a giant Ziploc bag full of them.

overencumbered

This is probably obvious, but.. I’ve lost my knitting mojo. I’ve lost my blogging mojo. I’ve even lost my spinning mojo. In fact, it seems like all I CAN do is freak out about the scary world after graduation. I will have all of my grad school applications done in the next few days, and I’m hoping to have at least a good lead on a job by the end of the week. Maybe then I can finally get to work on some serious knitting!! Arrgh.
